MIDVALE, Utah, May 31, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police will be conducting an administrative checkpoint Friday night through Saturday morning, stopping vehicles at random to seek impaired drivers and other violations.

The checkpoint will partially cordon off the roadway for westbound traffic at 144 W 7200 S in Midvale from 9 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday, the Unified Police Department has announced online.

The effort is chiefly a drunk driving checkpoint, Sgt. Aymee Race, UPD’s public information officer, said Thursday.

Basically seven cars “at random” will be stopped at a time, each stop planned to last 90 seconds per vehicle  if no problems are detected, Race said.

Drivers will be asked for their driver license, registration and proof of insurance while officers check for equipment violations or other problems, she said. Fourteen officers will operate the checkpoint, plus 11 other civil officials will be on hand.

A similar, 5-hour 2018 UPD checkpoint  over the New Year’s Eve weekend in Holladay counted over 500 vehicles passing through, but only about 100 were stopped, Race said.

An administrative plan with the warrant authorizing the checkpoint will be available at the checkpoint for inspection, according to the UPD announcement, also available for review at UPD’s Midvale office at 7912 S. Main.
