Update: 9-year-old Kearns boy out of ICU after being shot in head in drive-by shooting

KEARNS, Utah, Jan. 3, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The 9-year-old boy shot Dec. 28 in a Kearns drive-by shooting has been moved out of intensive care.

The child, whose name has not been released, was hit in the head when two men in a BMW fired a shot down Stockton Street, in Kearns. The boy, one of several children seated in an SUV that was not moving, was transported in critical condition to Primary Children’s Hospital.

The other children were unhurt. The full extent of the 9-year-old’s injuries is not yet known.

The Unified Police Department arrested one suspect, Oscar Bermejo-Zaragoza, 19, the following day. A second suspect remains at large.

Unified Police Department Detective Ken Hansen has said the shooting may have been gang related.
