ROY, Utah, Sept. 15, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A Roy High School teacher has been reinstated after four days of administrative leave for giving students a dating quiz that asked intimate questions.
Candace Thurgood, a 25-year faculty member at Roy High, has been invited back to the classroom where she taught students Adult Life classes.
The survey, assigned as homework and requiring students’ names, asked class members at the junior grade level to reveal whether they had dated, had been kissed against their will, had undressed while “parking,” or had had one or more abortions, among other questions.
One mother of a student posted about her concerns on Facebook, and the post was shared on the Scary Mommy website.
District officials said the quiz violated district policies and student privacy laws.
District officials said the survey would not be used again, but Thurgood will not be fired.
“We do not believe there was any malicious or devious intent on the part of Thurgood in giving the assignment,” said a statement released Friday afternoon by Weber School District spokesman Lane Findlay.
“As a result of the investigation, appropriate corrective action will be taken against Thurgood, but it will not involve termination. The condition of any corrective action can include verbal counseling, written reprimand, probation, suspension, or any combination of these. Privacy policies protecting teachers prohibits the district from revealing the exact details of corrective actions to be taken in this case.
“We sincerely apologize to parents or students who have been adversely affected by this survey. Resources are available at the school if students would like to talk with someone about them.”
