Weber County, Garfield County tornadoes similar in wind levels, different in lengths

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 23, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The National Weather Service, Salt Lake City office, has assessed and rated the two tornadoes reported in Utah on Thursday.

Weber County

The first tornado, reported at about 3:45 p.m., touched down briefly in Riverdale before doing its most serious damage in Washington Terrace. Damage also was reported in South Ogden.

The Weber County tornado touched down, then lifted several times, so damage on the ground was not continuous. Where it did touch down, it created EF 1 damage, which indicates wind speeds of 86 to 110 miles per hour.

In South Ogden, the wind levels were rated EF 0, a rating that indicates winds of 65 to 85 mph. The tornado dissipated in South Ogden.

The Weber County tornado’s primary rating is EF 1. It had an intermittent track length of almost three miles, and a maximum width of 40 to 50 yards.

Garfield County

The second tornado, which happened about 275 miles to the south, in Panguitch, Garfield County, occurred at about 6:54 p.m.

The Panguitch tornado was also rated EF 1, with areas of EF 0 damage. It traveled about three-quarters of a mile, and had a maximum width of about 25 feet.
