Feb. 18 (UPI) — Animal welfare inspectors opened an investigation after some 1,000 day-old chicks were found abandoned in an open field outside Cambridgeshire in eastern England on Friday.
The bright yellow chicks were found huddling in large groups to stay warm, inspectors said. Some were dead or dying but most survived. Investigators said the birds may have come from a commercial poultry producer and abandoned by a third party in a field near Peterborough.
“I have never seen anything like it, it was just a sea of yellow. And the noise was unbelievable,” Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals inspector Justin Stubbs said. “”Thankfully, most of the chicks did not appear to be suffering.”
