June 13 (UPI) — Two prison guards were shot and killed on Tuesday before two inmates escaped from a Georgia work detail trip, the Putnam County Sheriff said.
The unidentified correctional officers were supervising prisoners traveling on a bus to a work detail along Georgia’s Highway 16 in the central part of the state, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. An inmate on the bus opened fire, killing the guards, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said.
WSB-TV reported two prisoners then escaped the vehicle and are at large.
They are identified as Ricky Dubose, 24, and Donnie Russell Rowe, 43. Police advise anyone who sees them to call 911.
It wasn’t immediately clear if either of the escaped inmates was responsible for the shootings.
Dubose and Rowe made their getaway in a stolen 2004 Honda Civic, painted green with the Georgia license plate number RBJ660, the Georgia Department of Corrections reported.
