ATLANTA, Feb. 11 (UPI) — The U.S. Attorney’s office in Atlanta announced 46 current and former Georgia Department of Corrections employees were arrested Thursday after being indicted on drug smuggling and bribery charges.

They will join more than 100 other employees charged in an ongoing investigation targeting a system used to smuggle cocaine, methamphetamine and cell phones into nine state prisons.

Guards from Phillips, Macon, Dooly, Hancock, Pulaski and Baldwin state prisons were part of an undercover operation investigating prison works for allegedly accepting bribes to protect drug smugglers.

The defendants began to appear in court Thursday morning.
