May 1 (UPI) — San Diego police said a 49-year-old gunman shot seven people, one fatally, during a birthday pool party at an University City apartment complex.

Police said responding officers fatally shot gunman Peter Selis on Sunday at the La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex, which is near the Westfield UTC Shopping Center.

Witnesses said Selis never left his poolside chair as he shot down people, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Police officers responded to the shooting and confronted the suspect, who pointed his gun at the officers. That began an exchange of gunfire in which Selis was killed, police said.

Detectives were working to determine a motive for the shooting. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victims, but they are described as four women and three men. The victim who died was a woman.

A 2015 bankruptcy filing showed that Selis, a car mechanic for the past five years, faced more than $108,000 in debt. He had two children and one stepchild.

“This was a truly horrific and disturbing act. We pray for the victims and thank our first responders. Our city rejects this senseless violence,” San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said at a press conference.

“All of our thoughts and prayers [at the San Diego Police Department] are with the victims, their families and everyone affected by this terrible crime,” San Diego Chief of Police Shelley Zimmerman said in a statement.
