A lone gunman armed with at least one bomb and an automatic weapon attacked Dallas Police headquarters early Friday morning before fleeing in an armored van where he was shot to death by police sharpshooters.

According to a Dallas Police spokesman, the gunman pulled up to police headquarters about 12:30 a.m. and opened fire, spraying the building and nearby police cars with a hail of bullets before speeding off, smashing into several squad cars along the way.

The gunman also left behind at least one package filled with pipe which later exploded after being picked up by a police bomb squad robot.

The chase ended 13 miles away at a Jack-in-the-Box restaurant where police snipers disabled the van by shooting out the engine block with a high-powered .50 caliber rifle.

Police attempted to negotiate with gunman who they say called 9-1-1 dispatchers moments after the attack and ranted for several minutes about a child custody dispute. They say he also indicated the van was rigged with C4 plastic explosives.

The standoff at the Jack-in-the-Box lasted until shortly after 5 a.m. when the gunman was shot through the van’s windshield by a police sharpshooter.

It took several hours before police could confirm the the gunman has been killed as they were forced until bomb squad robots could determine if the van was rigged with explosives.

Late reports indicate other explosive devices were found inside the van which began to burn early Saturday afternoon. The cause of the fire has yet to determined.

Police say amazingly no police personnel were wounded in the attack.
