Aug. 11 (UPI) — An expressway accident in China has killed at least 36 people and injured 13 Friday morning, according to Chinese media reports.
The accident occurred in northwestern China’s Shaanxi Province when a bus hit a wall in the Qinling tunnel on the Xi’an-Hanzhong Expressway, reported CGTN.
Xinhua reported the bus was traveling from Chengdu City, capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, to Luoyang City, located in central China’s Henan Province.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 260,000 people die in vehicular accidents each year in China.
“The carnage that occurs on the world’s roads every single day is a public health crisis of gargantuan proportions,” said Bernhard Schwartländer, WHO China Representative, reported China Daily.
