EASTMAN, Ga., Aug. 14 (UPI) — A suspect who shot and killed a Georgia police officer as he exited his car Saturday is still at large.
Eastman Police Officer Tim Smith was responding to a call of a suspicious person in the community about 130 miles from Atlanta when he was killed, CNN reported.
He was fatally shot after encountering the subject and exiting his vehicle, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Scott Whitley said.
After the gunman shot Smith, the officer returned fire, the Macon Telegraph reported. He was taken to a local hospital where he died.
Eastman, the county seat of Dodge County, has about 5,500 residents. Its police department has 15 officers.
The shooting occurred about 9:30 p.m.
