Sept. 9 (UPI) — Hurricane Katia — one of three swirling south of the United States — strengthened to a Category 3 storm off Mexico’s gulf waters, forecasters said Friday.

In its 7 p.m. advisory, the National Hurricane Center said Katia now has maximum sustained winds of 105 mph.

The hurricane was located 130 miles southeast of Tampico, Mexico, and 130 miles north of Veracruz, Mexico. It’s moving west-southwest at 7 mph.

The government of Mexico issued a hurricane warning for the coast from Cabo Rojo to Laguna Verde and a tropical storm warning for Cabo Rojo north to Rio Panuco and south of Laguna Verde to Puerto Veracruz.

The storm is expected to make landfall in Mexico’s southeast coast late Friday or early Saturday.

Katia is the 11th named storm this Atlantic hurricane season and follows Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Jose.
