DAYTON, Ohio, Feb. 29 (UPI) — Daniel Schooler, charged in the shooting death of his brother, a pastor of a Dayton, Ohio, church, is expected to appear in court Monday.
William Schooler, 70, pastor of St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church, was shot in the church office at the conclusion of worship services on Sunday, allegedly by his younger brother. Witnesses said Daniel Schooler left the services and followed Pastor Schooler into the church office. About 20 people present in the church reported that they heard gunfire shortly after.
Daniel Schooler, 68, has a violent past which includes a 2011 felony assault charge, to which he pleaded guilty in a case with court documents noting he “may be mentally ill or in need of treatment”; an attack on a woman in her home in 2002, which resulted in a two-year prison term; charges dismissed after a friend said in 2007 Schooler attacked him with a golf club and a 2008 incident in which two men said Schooler attacked them with a hammer.
The report in the 2008 incident noted Schooler has a tendency toward violence when he doesn’t take his medication.
Schooler is currently in jail in Montgomery County, Ohio, facing murder charges.
