HOUSTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) — Two people were shot and one died Friday after a shooting at an apartment complex in Houston, prompting a nearby college campus to be placed on lockdown, authorities said.
The shooting occurred at 11:30 a.m. at the University Courtyard Apartments, officials said, a complex owned by Texas Southern University in southeast Houston.
Two people were shot, according to authorities, and one of those victims has died from their injuries. The condition of the other victim was not immediately reported.
“Texas Southern University has announced the campus is on lockdown following a shooting incident just moments ago,” spokeswoman Eva Pickens said in a statement shortly after the shooting. “Early reports indicate two shot — conditions not known right now.”
Pickens indicated that the gunman had not yet been captured. The Houston Police Department, though, said a possible suspect has been detained.
“The assailant is still at large. All staff are asked to remain in offices –- students to remain in classrooms until further notice,” she said.
Incidentally, another shooting was reported in the same area at the same apartment complex late Thursday, the university said on its website.
“In the wake of these incidents, our campus security and police department is increasing its presence and will continue to work closely with the Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the Precinct 7 Constables Office,” the university said in the statement.
The shooting near TSU occurred hours after another shooting at Northern Arizona University on Friday — and a short time before President Barack Obama was set to visit with families of victims in Oregon, who were killed and wounded a week ago at Umpqua Community College.
