Aug. 22 (UPI) — A Kentucky woman allegedly crashed into a crowd of people watching the solar eclipse Monday, killing one person and injuring another, authorities said.
Alyssa Noble, 38, crashed into a power pole, causing her vehicle to flip and smash into several people in downtown Hayden, Ky., WKYT reported. The impact caused the death of 23-year-old Mackenzie Hayes, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another woman, Rhonda Belcher, was seriously injured and was airlifted by helicopter to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.
Witnesses told LEX 18 the women were in a crowd of people who were outside to watch the solar eclipse.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
“It isn’t clear at this time what led to her crashing,” said Capt. Jennifer Sandlin of the Kentucky State Police, which is investigating the incident, according to NBC News.
Hayes was reportedly watching the eclipse next door to her workplace, Primary Care.
Barry Martin, the CEO of Primary Care Centers, released the following statement: “A tragic accident occurred today involving our Primary Care Centers family. Officials are investigating the accident. We are asking that everyone keep all of those involved in your prayers and be respectful of their privacy.”
Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation warned of a potential increase in traffic accidents during the eclipse.
