WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 (UPI) — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton continues to lead for the Democratic nomination, according to a new poll, whereas former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina has surged in the Republican side.
For the Democratic nomination for president, Clinton had 42 percent of support from registered voters identifying as Democrats or left-leaning Independents, according to a poll released Monday by CNN and ORC International. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sandershad 24 percent of support while Vice President Joe Biden had 22 percent.
Biden has not formally announced a presidential bid and if he were not in the race, Clinton’s support would surge to 57 percent while support for Sanders would rise up to 28 percent. The same poll asked participants whether they approve of PresidentBarack Obama — 44 percent approve of the way Obama is handling his job as president, 52 percent disapprove and 6 percent had no opinion.
On the GOP side, registered Republicans or Republican-leaning Independents wereasked whether they had a favorable or unfavorable opinion of Republican presidential hopefuls. The poll was conducted after the second Republican presidential debate, held Thursday.
Neurosurgeon Ben Carson led the polling with 65 percent having a favorable view, followed by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio‘s 57 percent and Fiorina’s 54 percent. Real estate mogul and reality television star Donald Trump had 52 percent favoring him.
Among Republican presidential nominees, Trump continues to lead the field with 24 percent of support, while Fiorina jumped to 15 percent, up from 3 percent earlier this month, following what was considered a strong performance during the second Republican debate.
Carson had 14 percent of support for the nomination, Rubio had 11 percent and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush had 9 percent.
