NEW YORK, June 24 (UPI) — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said Friday he will vote for Hillary Clinton, the presumptive nominee, in the general election.
Sen. Sanders, D-Vt., answered “yes” when asked in an MSNBC interview if he intended to vote for Clinton. He stopped short of dropping out of the race, though, adding he looked forward to an upcoming speech.
Clinton has acquired sufficient delegates to ensure her nomination at the Democratic National Convention in July.
Sanders added his aim is to “do everything I can to defeat Donald Trump,” the presumptive Republican candidate, and to “fight for the strongest possible [Democratic Party] campaign platform” which supports working people and “stands up to big money interests.”
“I think Trump in so many ways will be a disaster for this country if he were to be elected president,” Sanders said on Morning Joe. “We do not need a president whose cornerstone of his campaign is bigotry, is insulting Mexicans and Latinos and Muslims and women. Who does not believe in the reality of climate change when virtually every scientist who has studied this issue understands we have a global crisis. This is not somebody who should become president.”
