WASHINGTON, April 2 (UPI) — An unidentified person was arrested after scaling the White House fence on Friday night, the Secret Service said.
Officials said the person tossed a backpack over the north fence at 11:45 p.m. and then scaled the fence. The person immediately taken into custody by Secret Service Uniformed Division officers.
The individual was charged with unlawful entry and taken to the Metropolitan Police Department, according to the U.S. Secret Service public information officer.
A security sweep of the area did not turn up any unusual results. Police did not identify the person or the contents of the backpack.
Police say White House operations continued as normal after the incident.
A similar incident occurred in November when a man jumped over the north fence draped in an American flag and holding a note pad in his mouth.
The White House installed additional 7 1/4-inch tall spikes with half-inch steel pencil-point tips to the fence in July to deter an increased amount of fence jumpers.
