COLUMBIA CITY, Ind., Jan. 14 (UPI) — Sparton Corporation and Ultra Electronics Holdings are to receive $30.3 million subcontracts for the manufacture of sonobuoys for the U.S. Navy.

The subcontracts come from their joint venture company, ERAPSCO.

Production will take place at Ultra Electronics USSI’s Columbia City, Ind., facility and Sparton’s De Leon Springs, Fla., facility and is expected to be completed by November 2018.

“I am pleased that we have secured this important contract that will continue to provide critical sensor capabilities to the U.S. Navy,” Rakesh Sharma, chief executive of Ultra Electronics said. “This contract is a reflection of the increased focus on anti-submarine warfare and the U.S. Navy’s commitment to providing key technology for this important mission.”

The subcontract to Ulta Electronics is worth $18.5 million, while Sparton is to receive $11.8 million.

A sonobuoy is a small, expendable sonar system. It is dropped from aircraft or ships in anti-submarine operations.
