NEW YORK, Jan. 5 (UPI) — A 15-year-old Brooklyn girl has been charged with the murder of her mother and her mother’s boyfriend, police said.
Destiny Garcia was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the killing of Rosie Sanchez, 38 and Anderson Nunez, 40 in their public housing complex apartment in Brooklyn Dec. 28, police said.
Police found Sanchez Sunday in an easy chair with multiple gunshot wounds. Nunez’s body was found lying on the floor with gunshot and multiple stab wounds.
Garcia first told police she killed the two because her Nunez was sexually abusing her and her mother did nothing to stop it, but NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Garcia changed her story on Monday, saying she was being beaten by her mother and it was Nunez who did nothing to stop it.
“We don’t believe this was at all an act of self-defense,” Boyce said. “She went and got a gun…. That’s not consistent with someone (acting) in self-defense.”
Prosecutors said at Garcia’s near Midnight court appearance they believe Garcia had help in the killing and the judge ordered her held without bail.
The teen allegedly kept the killings to herself for close to a week, while she shopped and spent New Year’s Eve in Times Square, officials said.
Garcia, with her father present, confessed to police on Monday. She will be tried as an adult.
