BALTIMORE, May 21 (UPI) — Two horses died in Baltimore in separate incidents in races leading up to the Preakness Stakes on Saturday morning.
The Baltimore Sun reported 9-year-old Maryland-bred Homeboykris collapsed and died after winning the first race at Pimlico Race Course and 4-year-old filly Pramedya was euthanized after suffering a leg injury during the fourth race.
Pramedya’s death was more visible to the crowd as she was euthanized on the track after she suffered a fracture of the left front cannon bone on the far turn.
Her jockey, Daniel Centeno, was also sent to the hospital after reportedly breaking his right clavicle.
Homeboykris rallied from behind to win the first race of the day but collapsed on the way to the winner’s circle after suffering what was thought to be a heart attack.
“So apparently, not long after leaving the winner’s circle, the boy that takes care of him said they had gone probably 100 yards, and he got wobbly and fell over and he pretty much was dead when he hit the ground,” Homeboykris’s trainer Francis Campitelli said.
A Pimlico official said Homeboykris would be sent to a Pennsylvania veterinary hospital for a necropsy.
