RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 21 (UPI) — A woman was accidentally shot outside a gun show by one of the passengers in her car, but has already been released from the hospital thanks to a headrest that slowed the bullet enough to just graze her head.
Alyssa Glosson was shot outside a gun show in North Carolina this weekend when a woman in the back seat of her car, Lasonya Judd, accidentally discharged the weapon while comparing it to another that had just been purchased.
Glosson, her husband William and Judd were leaving the Dixie Gun and Knife Classic at the N.C. State Fairgrounds when William Glosson asked Judd to compare his personal handgun to another he’d just bought at the show.
As William Glosson handed the weapon to Judd, police say the gun somehow went off during the exchange and fired at the back of Alyssa Glosson’s head. The headrest, they say, must have slowed the bullet’s speed as it only grazed her. She was taken to the hospital, treated and released on Sunday.
Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said police are treating the shooting as an accident, based on William Glosson’s call to 911 and explanation of how it happened.
“He says, ‘Look at this,’ and somehow or another, when she grabbed it — the gun went off,” said Harrison.
The shooting is the second in four years at the annual show.
