NEW YORK, Aug. 14 (UPI) — Two terminals at New York’s John F. Kennedy International airport were evacuated Sunday night after reports of possible shots fired, causing some panic and flight delays, police said.
An early investigation could not confirm any shots actually being fired, but the investigation is ongoing, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.
Shots were allegedly heard in Terminal 8 near departures about 9:30 p.m. and the area was promptly evacuated, Port Authority police said. Terminal 1 was also evacuated after reports of shots fired there as well.
Van Wyck Expressway, the street in Queens running near the airport was partially closed to help police in the evacuation and sweep of the terminals, the Port Authority said.
A “full ground stop” was placed on all air traffic arriving at the airport until 11.30 p.m., causing the diversion of some incoming flights and numerous flight delays in the New York area.
Early reports on social media said there was some running and screaming about the time of the evacuation.
