BOISE, Idaho, April 21, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — An Ada County (Idaho) deputy died Sunday morning after being shot during a Boise traffic stop Saturday night.
The victim, Deputy Tobin Bolter, was the first Ada County deputy to die in the line of service, officials said Sunday in a news conference. Bolter was a 7-year veteran of law enforcement, and had joined the ACSO in January.
Bolter had approached a gray Chevrolet driven by a 65-year-old Boise man at about 8:55 p.m. Saturday.
“When he approached the driver’s window, the driver shot the deputy and fled the scene,” said Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford at the 10:55 a.m. news conference. “Video shows that the deputy never even made it to the window.”
“We would like to thank the citizen who stopped and rendered aid to Deputy Bolter. I think it goes to show what kind of community we live in, where there are evil people that are willing to do evil things, but there are good people that help us who come to our aid.”
The alleged shooter, whose name has not yet been released, fled the scene in his vehicle. He was later found outside a residence by law enforcement agents. He reportedly pulled a gun on officers, and was shot by one or more officers. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.
Police would later learn that the alleged shooter had a $3,000 warrant out for his arrest.
Additionally, a law enforcement officer driving to join the investigation reportedly hit a private car, injuring the driver. That victim’s injuries are not considered life threatening, the Sheriff said.
Officer-involved-critical incident investigations will be conducted by outside agencies in both the shooting of the deputy’s alleged shooter and the collision caused by the other officer, the Sheriff said.
