INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., May 3, 2016 (Gephardt Daily & UPI) — Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz is calling it quits.

In a statement made early Tuesday evening Texas senator Cruz said he would be suspending his campaign, dashing hopes of a contested GOP convention later this summer.

Cruz’s announcement comes in the wake of Donald Trump’s overwhelming victory in Tuesday’s Indiana primary, which was considered a must win for Cruz.

“From the beginning I’ve said that I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory. Tonight, I’m sorry to say, it appears that path has been foreclosed,” Cruz said Tuesday night.

“The voters chose another path, and so, with a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign.”

The Cruz campaign began dampening expectations for the vote in Indiana over the weekend, although the U.S. senator from Texas Cruz vowed to fight on.

The last remaining challenger to a Trump nomination is Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Kasich’s team released a statement early Tuesday saying they would stay in the race regardless of Tuesday’s primary results in Indiana.

Tuesday’s win appears to clear Trump’s path to the 1,237 delegates required to win the GOP’s presidential nomination.
