SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 26, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 31-year-old man armed with a wooden sword was arrested Sunday after police say he entered the Cathedral of the Madeleine and began assaulting people.

Salt Lake City police say Chandler Grillone entered the Roman Catholic church at 331 E. South Temple while mass was in progress and began assaulting people.

“[Grillone] struck two victims with a bamboo wooden sword. He then struck a third victim with his fists, knocking the victim’s glasses off and breaking them,” according to a probable cause statement filed in 3rd District Court.

The victim’s glasses were valued at $1,500, the affidavit says.

After being taken into custody by officers, Grillone “twisted away and refused to get into the police car,” arrest documents say.

Grillone also braced his head and neck against the door of the police car, preventing officers from getting him into the car, according to court documents.

“Multiple commands were given by uniformed officers but he still resisted,” the affidavit says.

Officers ultimately used a WRAP safety restraint to transport Grillone to jail, arrest documents say. The WRAP restraint features a locking shoulder harness, leg restraints and ankle straps.

Grillone is being held without bail in the Salt Lake County jail system for investigation of:

  • Two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony
  • Assault, a class B misdemeanor
  • Interfering with a peace officer, a class B misdemeanor
  • Disorderly conduct, an infraction
