LOGAN, Utah, May 16, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police say a Layton man shot and killed by officers in Logan on Wednesday afternoon was expecting to meet an underage girl at the park.

Adam Scott Phillips, 33, was the subject of an Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force investigation and had been communicating with an undercover officer he believed was an underage girl, Logan City police said in a news release Thursday.

Police confronted Phillips about 4:30 p.m. at Denzil Stewart Nature Park, 698 E. 100 South, where a meeting had been arranged, police said.

When officers tried to arrest him, Phillips pulled out a gun and fired at officers at close range, according to police.

An officer returned fire, leading to Phillips’ death. Two officers who were injured in the altercation were treated at a local hospital and were later released.

Police say officers performed life-saving measures on Phillips, but he died at the scene.

The Northern Utah Critical Incident Protocol Team is investigating the shooting. Those findings will be reviewed by the Cache County Attorney’s Office.

The officer who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending the review.
