BATTLE CREEK, Mich., Sept. 20 (UPI) — About 10,000 cases of Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles have been voluntarily recalled because they might be contaminated with listeria, Kellogg Co. announced.
The recall affects 25 states. No other Eggo products are affected, the company said in a release Monday. The company said it learned about the possible problem after routine tests and hasn’t received any reports of illnesses.
The 10-count packs have a “Best if used by” dates of Nov. 21, 2017 and Nov. 22, 2017, and can be found on a label on the side of the box.
Consumers are being asked to throw away the product and contact Kellogg by calling 800-962-1413 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Monday through Friday or by visiting its website at https://www.kelloggs.com/en_US/contact-us.html
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others who have weakened immune systems. It can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
Short-term symptoms for healthy people include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
In September 2009, the Food and Drug Administration found listeria at an Atlanta plant that made Eggo Buttermilk Waffles.
And in January 2010, the FDA sent a letter to the company about problems with its safety standards after the FDA found listeria at an inspection of the Georgia plant.
