52-year-old skier caught, injured in avalanche in Big Cottonwood Canyon

BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah, Jan. 26, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A backcountry skier was injured Friday afternoon when he was caught in an avalanche in the Silver Fork Canyon area of Big Cottonwood Canyon.

The 52-year-old man was partially buried, and suffered a head injury when the avalanche occurred, at about 3:30 p.m.

Two other skiers were caught in the avalanche, but escaped serious injury, according to information shared on Twitter by the Unified Police Department. One skier caught up in the slide was carried 200 to 300 feet. That skier managed to keep his head above the snow, according to reports.

A medical helicopter responded to the area to transport the seriously injured skier to an area hospital.
