GRAND COUNTY, Utah, May 21, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — It was a dark and stormy night, and emergency responders were called to the Bow and Arrow Canyoneering Route after a woman’s hair became entangled in rappelling gear.

“May 20, 2024, at 20:54, as an ominous sky loomed with thunder rumbling in the distance, Grand County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (GCSAR) and Grand County EMS (GCEMS) were dispatched,” a Grand County EMS Facebook post says.

“They responded to a report of an approximately 50-year-old female who had been injured when her hair became entangled in a rappelling device.

“Upon arrival, crews found that the woman had been freed from the device and lowered to stable ground by her companions. The canyoneering group had administered initial care and bandaged her injuries. Paramedics Bogan, Meyer, and Passarella took over treatment at the scene while GCSAR set up a technical lowering system.

“Once the patient was stabilized in a litter, GCSAR navigated her through a multistage, complex rope system amidst challenging windy and rainy conditions,” the post says. “The crews successfully departed the scene at 01:00.”

The EMS crew was grateful for SAR’s “intricate lowering system executed under such tough conditions,” the post says.

“They also commend the prepared canyoneering companions for their calm and effective response in attending to their injured friend and aiding in the rescue effort.”
