SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 21, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters say transients appear to have caused the fire that on Monday night burned an abandoned house at 700 East 3085 South.

According to Desmond Johnson, Unified Fire Department information officer, crews were called to the scene at 8:23 p.m. after smoke and flames were seen through the home’s second story windows.

Once firefighters arrived, they made their way inside the home and quickly brought the blaze under control.

Investigators say the building had been abandoned for more than two years, and there were signs vagrants had been camping inside the structure for quite some time.

Structural damage to the home was considerable, but firefighters were unable to put a dollar total to the loss.

The investigation is ongoing.
