SOUTH SALT LAKE, UTAH – October 14, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A man is in critical condition Wednesday morning after being hit by a school bus as he crossed the street.

According to South Salt Lake Police spokesperson Gary Keller, the 73-year-old man, who is also visually impaired, was crossing in a crosswalk at 2700 South and 300 East just before 7 a.m. when a Granite School District bus that was making a left turn hit him. “This man has a routine, he walks this route every morning,” said Keller. “As the bus turned the man was struck by the back wheels of the bus.”

Keller said there were approximately 25 high school students on the bus at the time and they were transferred to another bus and taken to school. “The driver of the bus pulled over immediately into a church parking lot when the incident happened,” said Keller. “As per a Granite School District protocol, for safety purposes, a Utah Highway Patrol officer has to inspect the bus at the location of the accident.”

The man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital in critical condition but is stable. Keller said the victim suffered a broken right leg and abrasions from the incident. His identity has not been released.

The incident is still under investigation.
