WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Sept. 17, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A 14-year-old boy was shot Saturday afternoon in Parkway Park and went to the hospital in a private vehicle before police were even notified.

West Valley City Police Lt. Amy Maurer said officers were called at about 3 p.m. to a possible shooting near the basketball court in the park at 3420 W. Parkway Blvd.

A victim had been shot and was observed leaving the scene, Maurer said. Officers arrived, established the crime scene, and started identifying witnesses.

“We learned the victim was a juvenile, taken to the hospital in a personal car,” Maurer said. “He was in good condition. No life-threatening injuries.”

Officers were still working with witnesses a few hours later, and Maurer said references to the shooter were “very vague.”

“We’re looking for a gray Chevy Impala or Toyota Corolla that was last seen going east out of the park,” she said.

“We appreciate the people that are willing to give us information, but sometimes it’s kind of contradictory, so we have to weed through that to get information that’s viable and gives us potential clues.”

Maurer said police had nothing specific to indicate whether this shooting was gang-related, “other than not a lot of information is being given and the victim himself didn’t see a lot.”

The incident is still under investigation.
