SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – Nov. 27, 2015 – (Gephardt Daily) – A 23-year-old man involved in an accident with a commercial vehicle on I-215 Thursday morning has died.

According to Utah Highway Patrol, Austin Atack, who was driving his car eastbound near 1700 East at about 3:15 a.m., slammed into the right rear of the truck, also traveling eastbound, at a high rate of speed. The collision caused his vehicle to spin and come to rest in the right-side emergency lane.

The force of the crash drove the truck into a retaining wall, nearly cutting off the front end of the truck. The bed of the truck, which overhangs the rear, caused severe damage to the top of the Nissan Altima.

Atack was extricated and transported via Life Flight to Intermountain Medical Center in extremely critical condition. According to friends and family, Atack passed away from his injuries later that day.

The investigation is ongoing. Sgt. Todd Royce of the Utah Highway Patrol said investigators are currently waiting for toxicology reports to confirm whether alcohol was a factor.

The driver of the truck was not injured.
