West Valley City police nab two in stolen car

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Nov. 28, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A chase through a West Valley neighborhood early Monday morning ended with two men in police custody and a stolen car recovered.

West Valley Police Lt. Steve Burke said the pursuit began at about 12:41 a.m. when an officer saw a vehicle that was listed as having been stolen out of West Jordan on Nov. 25. When the officer tried to pull over the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta, the driver kept going at speeds ranging from 40 mph to 60 mph.

There were no pedestrians or traffic in the area and the roads were dry, so the officer continued the chase, from about 3200 South and 2000 West, around and through a nearby mobile home park.

Burke said the chase ended when the driver crashed the Jetta through a fence and into a phone company utility box, seriously damaging the front end of the car.

The driver fled on foot into the mobile home park, but the only passenger in the vehicle remained and was taken into custody for questioning.

Burke said extra officers were already patrolling the area because of a recent spike in criminal activity, so a containment area was quickly established and a K-9 officer was able to locate the suspect.

Neither the driver nor the passenger was injured in the crash.

The incident is still under investigation, Burke said, but it’s likely that the driver of the car will be taken to Salt Lake County Jail for fleeing from an officer. Any other charges for the driver or the passenger will depend on the investigation.
