WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Feb. 5, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters battled a blaze at a residence in West Valley City Monday morning.

Battalion Chief Jeff Fox from the West Valley City Fire Department told Gephardt Daily crews were called to multiple reports of a structure fire near 4423 W. Trinity Ave. just after 7 a.m.

Six adults and three children who live at the residence were home at the time of the fire but were able to self evacuate, and were not injured. The residents have two dogs, one of whom died as a result of the fire. The other was let out of the home beforehand, but is now missing.

“When the crews arrived we had a lot of fire blowing out the window, in the back of the structure,” Fox said. “It looked like it was mostly one bedroom, it did extend up a little bit up into the attic space. The crews did a quick knockdown from the exterior then they went in through the front and extinguished the fire.”

Fox said there is a lot of smoke damage inside the structure and it is not habitable at this time. The exact extent of damages has not yet been assessed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Fox said.

The Red Cross will be assisting the displaced residents.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
