TEL AVIV, Israel, Sept. 27 (Gephardt Daily) — Former Israeli President Shimon Peres has died at a hospital in Tel Aviv two weeks after suffering a stroke, according to the Israeli News Agency. He was 93.
The stroke came just a week after he had a pacemaker implanted, and weeks after he was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat. In January, he suffered a heart attack and underwent an artery-clearing procedure.
Peres served as Israeli president between 2007 and 2014 and served three short stints as prime minister during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He also served in several other Cabinet posts, including defense minister, finance minister and foreign minister.
Peres, born in Poland as Szymon Perski, also held several diplomatic and military positions during and directly after Israel’s War of Independence, according to Wikipedia.
Peres won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize together with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat for the peace talks that he participated in as Israeli Foreign Minister, producing the Oslo Accords, according to the Wikipedia biography.
At the time of his retirement in 2014, Peres was the world’s oldest head of state.
