Remains of 9/11 Victim Identified
NEW YORK, March 19 (UPI) — More than 13 years after the Sept. 11, 2011 terror attacks, the New York medical examiners have identified remains belonging to one of the 2,753 victims.
The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner announced Thursday it identified 26-year-old Matthew David Yarnell of Jersey City, N.J. Yarnell worked as vice president of technology for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 97th floor of Two World Trade Center.
Up until this week, Yarnell’s remains, along with those of about 40 percent of the victims, had not been identified. So far, medical examiners have put names to the remains of 1,640 people who died in the attacks.
Yarnell’s remains were recovered during the initial search of ground zero in 2001 and 2002. Another 20 victims or more were unearthed by construction crews in 2013 during work on the new One World Trade Center.
The medical examiner’s office has recently been working on testing previously unidentified remains thanks to new advances in technology.
Last year officials announced all unidentified remains were to be moved to a repository on the World Trade Center grounds.
