Six Monet Paintings Heading To Auction Worth Up To $110M
NEW YORK, April 3 (UPI) — Six paintings representing of a variety of the iconic subject matter French Impressionist Claude Monet favored are expected to fetch up to $110 million at auction next month.
The paintings are part of a collection of Impressionist and Modern art heading to auction May 5 at Sotheby’s in New York.
They span some five decades of Monet’s career and feature work from some of his most celebrated series, including the water lilies, Seine and Venice series.
“The six works by Monet that we are privileged to present this May represent exactly what buyers are seeking at this moment: several of his most famous scenes, emerging from prestigious private collections and completely fresh to the market,” said Simon Shaw, co-head of Sotheby’s worldwide Impressionist and Modern art department. “We’re undeniably witnessing an exceptional moment for great works by Monet at Sotheby’s. As new generations and new markets rediscover the master, the supply of strong examples remaining in private hands is shrinking fast. The result is fierce competition that leads to the results we have witnessed recently at Sotheby’s.”
The Monet paintings set to head to the auction block include: “Nymphéas (Water Lillies),” estimated to fetch between $30 million and $45 million; “Le Palais Ducal,” estimated between $15 million and $20 million; “Bassin aux nymphéas, les rosiers,” estimated between $18 million and $25 million; “Le Chemin d’Epinay, effet de neige,” estimated between $6 million and $8 million; “La Seine a Vétheuil,” estimated between $6 million and $8 million; and “Au Val Saint-Nicolas pres Dieppe, matin,” estimated between $3 million and $4 million.
The collection is scheduled to be on view April 10-14 in London prior to the auction.
Last year, Sotheby’s sold 18 Monet paintings for $190.5 million and in 2012, Christie’s auction house sold a water lilies painting for $43.8 million.
