Traffic Stop on State Street Takes a Dangerous Turn

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – June 15, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – Officers observed a vehicle pull into 1342 S. State Street, park and start drug exchanges with individuals in the lot, Saturday, June 13 at around 8:26 a.m. SLCPD said an officer approached the driver’s door as the other officer went to the passenger side of the vehicle.

The officer asked the driver to step out of the vehicle, the driver opened the door placing the officer between the open door and the cab of the vehicle. The driver then put the vehicle in reverse and quickly accelerated. The open door caught the officer and pulled him into the vehicle.

The driver backed onto State Street then put the vehicle in drive to go south on State Street. The vehicle was heading directly for a street light when the officer grabbed the wheel and pulled the wheel to the left to avoid the pole. The vehicle jumped the median and struck a parked vehicle on the east side of State Street.

The driver was identified as Andrew Labbe 20; he was booked into jail for reckless endangerment, possession of controlled substances, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a dangerous weapon and felony warrants.

Two passengers were also arrested, Duvall McCoy 42, for possession of paraphernalia and Brittany Snow, 33, for possession of stolen credit cards. The officer didn’t sustain any injuries from the incident.
