HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Dec 13, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” has been the number one film in USA since debuting November 20.
The film starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson and Julianne Moore took in $113.3 million over the weekend bringing its total domestic gross to $244.4 million. The final film in the “Hunger Games” series has a worldwide take of $564.0 million.
In second place is the Ron Howard / Chris Hemsworth ocean adventure “In the Heart of the Sea.” The film opened in over 3100 theaters and brought in $11.0 million dollars. Industry experts are not expecting the film to do much more than around $30 million in the next few weeks, due to the avalanche of ticket sales already being sold for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” next week.
Disney/ Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” held firm at third place taking in $10.4 million over the weekend. The animated movie has earned over $89.6 million so far with a worldwide box office of $167.8 million for its three weeks in release. The film marks the 15th animated movie for Disney/ Pixar.
Also not moving from its fourth place position last week is the boxing flick, “Creed.” The sequel to “Rocky” stars Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan took in $10.1 million and has US total of $79.3 million.
Rounding out the top five films at the box office is the Christmas horror movie “Krampus,” bringing home $8.0 million over the weekend which makes its domestic haul $28.1.
