Weekend Box Office: ‘Star Wars VII’ Remains Number One

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Jan. 11, 2106 (Gephardt Daily) — The Force is strong with the new “Star Wars” movie, which is still in the No. 1 slot domestically for the fourth weekend in a row.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, the film earned an estimated $41.6 million domestically over the weekend, and has become the first film to gross over $800 million in the USA with a massive $812 million and has no sign of slowing down.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” took in a reported $53 million in China, after two days in release. Globally the film has earned over $1.73 billion.

Opening in second place is “The Revenant,” starring Golden Globe winner Leonardo DiCaprio. The film opened nationally to $38.0 million. The film was released in selected theaters Christmas Day and has earned a total of $39.5 million in total.

The Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy “Daddy’s Home” dropped from second place to third place this weekend, taking in an estimated $15 million, bringing its domestic total to $116.3 million since in its three-week run.

Fourth place belongs to newcomer “The Forest,” starring “Game of Thrones” Natalie Dormer. The horror film opened with an estimated $13.8 million.

“Sisters,” starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, drops into fifth place with a weekend take of $7.1 million. The comedy has earned $74.8 million after four weeks in release.
