MEXICO CITY, Jan. 11 (UPI) — Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was “hiding in plain sight” in a safehouse in his home state of Sinaloa just before he was captured, according to security analysts.
The safehouse raided by Mexican security forces on Friday in the city of Los Mochis was one of about five safehouses occupied by Guzman, according to a CNN report, some of which were connected to each other by an underground tunnel.
During the early morning raid on Friday, Guzman fled the safehouse through a tunnel built underneath a bathtub and later moved toward the city’s sewer drains.
Guzman later emerged from the drains because they were becoming filled with rain. He then stole a car at gunpoint before he was eventually apprehended by Mexican authorities.
