Weekend Box Office: ‘Zootopia’ Remains No. 1; ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ Opens In Second Place

HOLLYWOOD, March 14, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Disney’s “Zootopia” remains the No. 1 movie in the USA for the second weekend in a row, bringing in a domestic total $142.6 million.

The animated film starring the vocal talents of Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman has a worldwide tally of $431.3 million.

“10 Cloverfield Lane” opened with $25.2 million. The thriller stars John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and is based loosely on J.J. Abrams’ 2008 sci-fi film “Cloverfield.”

“Deadpool” remains in third place. The R-rated superhero movie took in an additional $10.8 million over the weekend. The film, which has been in theaters five weeks now, has earned a worldwide total of $708.1 million.

Gerard Butler’s “London Has Fallen” dropped to fourth place from second place, with a $10.6 million haul its second weekend out.

The political action movie has a two-week total of $38.8 million domestically. Industry experts are saying the film will be hard pressed to earn back it’s $60 million budget anytime soon.

The political comedy “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot,” starring Tina Fey and Margot Robbie, dropped to fifth place after taking in $4.5 million its second weekend in release. The film is underperforming with a total US box office of $14.5 million.

There were three additional films released this weekend, none of which garnered much audience attraction. “The Perfect Match” opened in sixth place with $4.1 million . The faith-based “The Young Messiah” debuted in seventh place with $3.4 million. And Sacha Baron Cohen’s “The Brothers Grimsby” opened in eighth place with $3.1 million domestically.
