May 30 (UPI) — Drugmaker Allegran announced a nationwide recall of its Taytulla birth control treatment Tuesday after some packages featured placebo and active pills placed out of order.
A physician report revealed the first four days of Taytulla’s 6×28 physician sample packs featured four maroon placebo pills instead of pink active capsules, according to Allegran.
The company said a correctly ordered physician sample pack of Taytulla should feature 24 pink capsules with hormones followed by four maroon capsules without hormones and the reversed order could cause unintended pregnancies.
“As a result of this packaging error, oral contraceptive capsules that are taken out of sequence may place the user at risk for contraceptive failure and unintended pregnancy,” Allegran said. “The reversing of the order may not be apparent to either new users or previous users of the product, increasing the likelihood of taking the capsules out of order.”
The Taytulla sample packages were distributed to health-care providers beginning August 2017. Allegran said it hasn’t received any reports of unintended pregnancies as a result of the packaging order.
Allergan is arranging for return of all sample pack products with the lot #5620706 with the expiration date May 2019 and urged patients to consult their physicians if they believe they are affected by the recall.
