TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Feb. 6, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A container leaking a noxious substance on a Utah Transit Authority bus sent UTA officers rushing to meet the driver in Taylorsville on Wednesday evening.
The driver’s eyes were burning when UTA officers arrived at 4480 S. Redwood Road, Carl Arky, UTA spokesman, told Gephardt Daily.
“It was bear repellant,” Arky said. “Someone had left it there. His throat was burning, his eyes were watering. It’s pretty powerful stuff. There were noxious fumes, but nobody was injured.”
Arky said the driver didn’t recognize the scent, but one of the arriving officers was a hunter and knew the smell immediately.
There were no passengers on the bus, and the driver soon recovered, Arky said. The driver took the bus back to the garage, “where I’m sure they will give it a thorough going over, making sure it is good and clean.”
Arky said there is no way to know if the bear spray was left intentionally or by accident.
