SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Feb. 26, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A South Jordan man already facing child pornography charges in one case has been charged with downloading more while awaiting trial.
A probable cause statement from the 3rd District Court in Salt Lake County said Thomas Charles Norton, 24, is facing three new charges of second-degree felony sexual exploitation of a minor. He was arrested Feb. 19 and transported to Salt Lake County Jail. Prosecutors have recommended Norton be held without bail.
The statement said that on Aug. 28, 2018, a complaint from Microsoft’s Skype was submitted stating a user uploaded an image of child pornography. A judicial order was written and approved and served to the Internet provider who stated the IP address returned to Norton’s address in South Jordan.
The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force previously conducted an investigation at the address, and determined Norton had possessed images of child pornography. He was charged with 15 counts of exploitation of a minor on Aug. 21, 2018. Norton was on pretrial release in this previous case when the new incidents allegedly occurred.
A search warrant was requested for the address in South Jordan and the search warrant was approved on Feb. 19.
“The search warrant was served and a digital camera containing an SD card was found in a bedroom in the residence,” the probable cause statement said. “In the same room was Thomas Norton’s driver’s license and other identifying documents. On the SD card inside the digital camera are images and videos taken of a cell phone displaying child pornography.”
The statement added: “Also on the SD card were images of Norton on his LDS Mission.”
