BYU-Idaho student drowns in Teton River

REXBURG, Idaho, June 18, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A BYU-Idaho freshman died on Friday while inner tubing on the Weber River, officials have confirmed.

The victim was Thomas Calvin Willie, from Malad, Idaho, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

Twenty-one-year-old Willie, who went by “Cal,” had been studying agribusiness. He and his group began floating at Monkey Rock, according to reports.

Investigators believe Willie may have been trapped in an undercurrent and debris at the bottom of a diversion dam.

Willie’s friends attempted a rescue, but were unsuccessful.
