LAYTON, Utah, July 7, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman is facing a felony charge after she allegedly racked up more than $700 of purchases with a stolen debit card in Layton.
A probable cause statement from the 2nd District Court of Farmington said Sheena Marie Gueso, 33, is facing charges of unlawful acquisition/possession/transfer of a financial card, a third-degree felony, as well as unlawful use of a financial transaction card, a class A misdemeanor.
“A victim reported someone had unlawfully obtained their debit card at an unknown time and location,” the probable cause statement said. “The victim was unsure who stole their debit card and reported multiple unauthorized transactions on her debit card.”
A total of $749.69 was unlawfully stolen from the victim’s debit card to purchase merchandise at multiple stores in Layton, the statement said. An investigation was undertaken at each store where the debit card was used unlawfully and video surveillance was obtained of a woman using the debit card at establishments in Layton.
A photograph of that person was placed on Facebook to help identify her, which was shared by media outlets.
“The identity of the woman was reported by multiple witnesses,” the arresting officer wrote in the statement. “I was able to make contact with the woman who agreed to conduct an interview with me.”
The woman, later identified as Gueso, came into the Layton Police Department and after being read her Miranda rights admitted to using the debit card unlawfully, the statement said. Gueso admitted to using the victim’s debit card on purchases she knew she did not have consent from the victim to make.
“When speaking with the victim it was expressed that Gueso did not have consent from the card holder to acquire the financial transaction card,” the statement said. “Gueso stated she did not have verbal permission to use the debit card, but had used the card before with the consent of the card holder so it was assumed she was allowed to use it again.”
Gueso was booked into Davis County Jail with her bail set at $7,800.
