EPHRAIM, Utah, Oct. 4, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — Snow College confirmed Monday that the football player killed Sunday in a single-vehicle accident was Mafatini Mafatini.
“Mafatini, a Snow College freshman, joined the Badgers this season as an offensive lineman,” a statement released Monday by the college says. “Prior to moving to Ephraim, Mafatini played football in Maui, Hawaii.”
Snow College’s head football coach, Zac Erekson, praised Mafatini’s character.
“We are extremely saddened by the news of Mafatini’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family back in Maui. Mafatini was such a bright light in this world. His smile and infectious laugh will be missed not only by our team, but by all those who knew him. Again, we give our love and prayers for his family and for all those that were involved in this terrible accident.”
College officials were on-site and worked closely with local first responders, the college statement says. Snow College President Bradley Cook thanked everyone for their care and concern.
“A tragedy like this shakes all of us,” Cook said. “We appreciate those who have delicately handled this situation with competence and pledge our support to our coaches, players, and the Mafatini family during this difficult time.”
Athletic Director Rob Nielson said Mafatini’s teammates will miss him.
“Badger Football is a family, and we all are experiencing grief today. We will work together and take care of one another.”
Snow College student leaders are planning to gather in memory of Mafatini at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, on the Robert Stoddard Football Field, and some items have been placed at the entrance on the Terry Foote Stadium in his honor.
